If you follow endurance sport at all, you have probably heard athletes and coaches talk about VO2 max as though it were a secret score that separates the good from the great. It is one of the most studied numbers in exercise science, and for good reason: it captures something fundamental about how well your body can turn oxygen into sustained effort. But it is often misunderstood, both in what it measures and in how much you can change it.

What VO2 Max Actually Measures

VO2 max is the maximum rate at which your body can take in, transport, and use oxygen during intense exercise. It is usually expressed in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute. The higher the number, the more oxygen your working muscles can consume, and the more energy you can produce aerobically before fatigue forces you to slow down.

Think of it as the size of your aerobic engine. Just as important is the easy work around these sessions. A large base of low-intensity aerobic exercise builds the heart, blood vessels, and muscular machinery that support a high VO2 max. Many endurance athletes follow a rough eighty-twenty split: about eighty percent of training easy, twenty percent hard. The hard days provide the stimulus; the easy days let you absorb it and stack up volume without burning out.

Putting It Together

A practical weekly structure for an intermediate runner or cyclist might include one interval session focused on VO2 max, one slightly longer threshold effort, a long easy session, and a couple of relaxed recovery days. Consistency over months matters far more than any single brutal workout. Recovery, sleep, and sensible nutrition all shape how well you adapt, and losing excess body weight can nudge the per-kilogram number up as well. Track your progress with a field test or a wearable estimate, but remember these are approximations.
