Say the word 'desert' and most people picture the Sahara: endless golden dunes shimmering under a merciless sun. That image is real, but it is only a fraction of the story. The Sahara is the largest hot desert on Earth, roughly the size of a continent, and it is a landscape of surprising variety, deep history, and unexpected links to the rest of the planet, including rainforests thousands of miles away.
Just how big it is
The Sahara sprawls across northern Africa, covering an area comparable to the entire United States or China. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Red Sea in the east, and touches or crosses about a dozen countries. Only the cold polar deserts of Antarctica and the Arctic are larger overall; among hot deserts, the Sahara stands alone at the top.
Despite its size, it is far from uniform. Vast seas of sand dunes, called ergs, make up only part of it. Much of the Sahara is actually rocky plateaus, gravel plains, dry valleys, and even mountains, some high enough to see occasional snow. The classic dune landscape is the exception rather than the rule.
A desert that was once green
Perhaps the most striking fact is that the Sahara has not always been a desert. Thousands of years ago, during a period sometimes called the 'Green Sahara,' large parts of it were grassland and wetland dotted with lakes. Rock art found across the region shows people herding cattle and animals such as giraffes and hippos living where there is now only sand.
This transformation was driven by slow, natural changes in the Earth's orbit and tilt, which shifted rainfall patterns over the region. As the climate dried, the lakes vanished and the desert we know today took shape. The Sahara's history is a powerful reminder that even the most extreme landscapes can change dramatically over long spans of time.
Life in a harsh land
The Sahara is demanding but not lifeless. Plants and animals have evolved remarkable ways to survive scorching days, cold nights, and scarce water:
- Animals such as the fennec fox use huge ears to shed heat, and many creatures are active mainly at night.
- Some species can survive with little or no drinking water, drawing moisture from their food.
- Hardy plants send roots deep to reach groundwater or spring to life quickly after rare rains.
- Oases, where underground water reaches the surface, support date palms, agriculture, and human settlements.
People have lived in and crossed the Sahara for millennia. Ancient trade routes carried salt, gold, and goods across the desert, linking distant cultures, and communities have long adapted their lives to its rhythms.
The Sahara's global reach
One of the desert's most surprising roles plays out far from Africa. Winds lift enormous quantities of Saharan dust high into the atmosphere and carry it across the Atlantic Ocean. This dust is rich in minerals, and when it settles over South America, it helps fertilize the soils of the Amazon rainforest. In a sense, one of the driest places on Earth helps nourish one of the wettest.
Saharan dust also influences weather and air quality across regions far away and can even affect the formation of tropical storms. It is a vivid example of how the planet's systems are connected, with a desert in Africa touching ecosystems and skies around the world.
More than a wasteland
The Sahara challenges the idea of a desert as empty or unchanging. It is enormous and varied, was green within human memory, shelters resilient life, has shaped human history, and reaches across oceans to fertilize distant forests. Far from a lifeless void, it is a dynamic and globally important part of the Earth, one whose past greenery hints that its future, like its history, may hold more change than we expect.
