The Ring of Fire: Why the Pacific Rim Shakes and Erupts

The dangers of the Ring of Fire do not stop at the shaking and the lava. Undersea earthquakes in subduction zones can suddenly shove huge volumes of water upward, generating tsunamis that race across the ocean at the speed of a jet aircraft and slam into distant coastlines with little warning. Volcanic eruptions bring their own cascade of threats, including ash clouds that ground aircraft, fast-moving flows of superheated gas and debris, and mudflows that can bury communities. Because so many people live along these fertile, resource-rich coasts, the human stakes are enormous.

Despite the risks, hundreds of millions of people make their homes along the Ring of Fire, drawn by fertile volcanic soils, rich fishing grounds, and long-established cities. Rather than abandon these places, societies have learned to adapt. Countries in the region are often world leaders in earthquake engineering, with buildings designed to sway rather than snap, along with strict construction codes, early-warning systems, and regular public drills. Networks of sensors monitor the ground and the seafloor, feeding warning systems that can give people precious seconds or minutes to react before shaking or a wave arrives.

For all the destruction it causes, the Ring of Fire is also a vivid reminder that Earth is a dynamic, living system whose surface is constantly being remade.
