They drive national economies, set cultural trends, and account for a large and growing share of global energy use and emissions, which makes them central to any effort to address climate change. How well humanity manages these giant urban regions, providing decent housing, clean air, reliable transport, and resilience to disaster, will help decide the quality of life for billions of people in the century ahead.
