Say the word desert and most people picture rolling sand dunes under a blazing sun. That image captures only part of the truth. Deserts are defined not by heat but by dryness, and by that measure they cover roughly a third of the Earth's land surface. Some are scorching, some are freezing, and the largest of them all is a place most people would never think to call a desert at all.
What makes a desert a desert
The standard definition is based on precipitation. A desert is a region that receives very little rain or snow, generally less than about 250 millimeters, or 10 inches, in a year. Some receive only a fraction of that. What matters is the scarcity of water, not the temperature, which is why the definition captures such a wide range of landscapes. Under this rule, the frozen interior of Antarctica qualifies as the largest desert on Earth, a vast polar desert where almost no moisture falls.
Why deserts form where they do
Deserts are not scattered randomly. They cluster in predictable places because of how air and water move around the planet. Several forces create them.
- Sinking dry air: around 30 degrees north and south of the equator, air that rose at the tropics descends, warms and dries out, creating a belt of great deserts.
- Rain shadows: tall mountain ranges force air upward, wringing out its moisture on one side and leaving a dry region on the other.
- Distance from the sea: deep in the interior of large continents, moist ocean air simply cannot reach, leaving the land parched.
- Cold ocean currents: along some coasts, chilly water cools the air and suppresses rainfall, producing coastal deserts that can be shrouded in fog yet almost never see rain.
The many faces of deserts
Because dryness comes in different forms, so do deserts. Hot deserts, like the great sand and rock expanses of North Africa and the Middle East, swing between blistering days and surprisingly cold nights because the dry air holds little heat after sunset. Cold deserts, found in central Asia and parts of North America, endure freezing winters. Coastal deserts along certain shorelines rank among the driest places on Earth, with some areas going years without measurable rain. Polar deserts, covering Antarctica and much of the Arctic, are locked in ice yet receive almost no fresh precipitation.
Life in the driest places
Harsh as they are, deserts are far from lifeless. The plants and animals that live there have evolved remarkable strategies to survive on very little water. Many desert plants store moisture in thick stems or leaves, spread shallow roots to catch brief rains, or coat themselves in waxy surfaces to slow evaporation. Animals often shelter underground during the heat of the day and emerge at night, and some can go long periods drawing the water they need from their food. These adaptations turn seemingly barren ground into surprisingly intricate ecosystems.
People have lived in and around deserts for thousands of years, developing their own ingenious methods. Communities learned to dig deep wells, channel rare floods onto fields, and build thick-walled homes that stay cool by day and hold warmth at night. Trade routes once threaded across some of the harshest deserts on Earth, linking distant cities through a chain of oases where travelers and animals could rest and drink. Far from being empty voids on the map, many deserts have been crossroads of commerce and culture.
Deserts on the move
Deserts are not fixed forever. Through a process called desertification, dry regions can expand when land is stripped of vegetation by drought, overgrazing or poor farming. This threatens the livelihoods of people who live on the fragile edges of arid zones and is a growing concern in many parts of the world. Understanding how deserts form and function is the first step toward protecting the communities and ecosystems that depend on these demanding but remarkable landscapes.
