You need an estimate of your maximum heart rate first. The classic shortcut subtracts your age from 220, so a 40-year-old would estimate a maximum around 180 beats per minute. It is a rough figure that can be off by ten beats or more, so treat it as a starting point rather than gospel. A more accurate approach uses a supervised field test or a lab assessment, or you can anchor zones to your lactate threshold heart rate, which tends to be more individual.

Be patient with the easy days. Many people find zone 2 frustratingly slow at first and have to walk on hills to keep their pulse down. Over several weeks the same effort produces a faster pace at the same heart rate, which is exactly the adaptation you are chasing.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Do not chase heart rate numbers on days when you are ill, sleep-deprived, or highly stressed, as your readings will be skewed and pushing through can set you back. Wrist-based optical sensors can misread during intervals, so a chest strap is more reliable for precise work. And remember that zones are tools, not rules; if the effort clearly does not match the number, trust your body.
